"My name is Edward, and these are the Stories of Sodor"
— Edward, Prologue

Edward Sawyer is a Furness Railway K2 Class. He is a mixed-traffic engine of the North Western Region of British Railways, formerly a passenger engine of the Furness Railway and Tidmouth, Knapford and Elsbridge Railway as well as a former mixed-traffic engine of the London & North Eastern Railway's Sodor division. He is also the main character and narrator of "The Stories of Sodor".

Biography[]

Early life[]

Edward began his career in 1891 as a passenger engine for the Furness Railway in Great Britain. He, Winston and Albert were the only non-faceless engines on the railway and were close friends. In 1896, one of the engines who worked on the line near the High Harrington Steelworks broke down and Edward was called in as a replacement. While he was running the line, he met the Steelworks' private engine, Samson, and developed a negative attitude towards industrial engines. However, he and Samson became friends after the latter saved him from a runaway. In 1907, the Midland and Sodor and Mainland Railways offered a merger with the Furness Railway, but after a man got injured, the plans were quickly dashed. The FR's manpower was reduced by a strike. After a serious explosion, the FR was able to continue on for a few more months, but the railway eventually closed.

Edward left for the Island of Sodor to work on the newly formed Elsbridge and Knapford Railway, where he met Toby and Thomas for the first time. Following sky blue repaint and renumbering, Edward became the number two engine of the Elsbridge and Knapford, becoming the line's dedicated passenger engine. All three engines helped to construct the railway in the succeeding years to Edward's acquisition. During this time Thomas and Toby helped to train Edward on the proper handling of goods trains. Following the completion of the Elsbridge and Knapford Railway, Edward became caught up in the intense competition between the Wellsworth and Suddery Railway and Sodor and Mainland Railway for passenger and goods traffic, due to the three companies being forced into close proximity of each other on a single island. Though the Sodor and Mainland would close in 1914, the intense rivalry between Edward, Toby and Thomas with the Wellsworth and Suddery's three engines, Colin, Lily and Adam would continue for several decades, long past the end of both railways. Albeit, the rivalry was temporarily suspended due to the events of the Great War (later referred to as World War I) from 1914 to 1918. During this time, the engines of both railways worked together, handling the increase in rail traffic as well as collaborating in large construction projects, which included the creation of Knapford Harbour in 1916.

The Nor'easter years[]

After the Elsbridge and Knapford Railway was taken over by the LNER following the Railways Act of 1921, Edward became their mixed-traffic engine. Likewise, the LMS took over the Wellsworth and Suddery Railway. As a result, the LNER and LMS inherited the feud between the Wellsworth and Suddery and Elsbridge and Knapford engines. Edward, Thomas and Toby began referring to their rivals as the "Midis", while Adam, Lily and Colin began referring to Edward and the others as the "Nor'easters". In 1922, the LNER's Sudrian manager, Jonathan Star, initiated express services with the acquisition of a new express engine named Gordon. Although he was a very kind and courteous engine at first, praise regarding Gordon's reliability caused the big engine to develop an arrogant personality. Due to this, Edward and Gordon would often get into arguments, with Edward taking exception to Gordon's behavior, especially towards the big engine's refusal to shunt his own express coaches.

Following the arrival of the LMS' new passenger engine, Arthur in 1923, Edward took a strong disposition to the new Midi, due to the latter engine's arrogant attitude. Edward's dislike of Arthur was often shared by the other engines on the island, even by Arthur's fellow engines. Arthur had a spotless record in terms of being on time and often liked to rub it in the other engines' faces. On a late night in December 1923, Arthur was held up at a station making him depart later than scheduled. Determined not to lose his spotless on time record, Arthur recklessly sped down the line at breakneck speed, resulting in him and his passenger train coming off the rails while descending the Preston Incline (later known as Gordon's Hill). The resulting accident caused irreparable damage to Arthur and his train, killing everyone aboard. This later came to be known as the Great Preston Disaster. As Arthur was damaged beyond repair, he had to be scrapped, effectively ending his life. As late as 1952, Edward was still resentful towards Arthur for his behavior and reckless actions leading up to his demise and the death of all occupants on his train. It was also during 1923, that Donald arrived from the Caledonian Railway in Scotland, joining the Midis.

When the LNER's heavy goods engine Henry arrived the following year, he got along better with the other engines than Gordon. Following his induction into the Nor'easter's roster, Edward accredited Henry's strength and hard work as being the reason behind the Nor'easters unmatched handling of heavy goods traffic. James also arrived on Sodor in 1924, and became the Nor'easter's second mixed traffic engine, meaning Edward was no longer the only Nor'easter serving that role. Although both engines got along well for the most part, Edward and James would occasionally quarrel or tease each other, much like two siblings would. For the next decade, the Nor'easter's engine roster remained largely unchanged. It was also during this time that Donald's twin Douglas, and Reginald were added to the Midis' roster. Douglas served as Arthur's replacement while Reginald became the rival express engine to Gordon.

The onset of the Great Depression in 1929 greatly affected Sodor, much like the rest of the world. As a result, economic hardships fell on the island's industries, including the railways. Due to the massive reduction in passenger and goods traffic, the rivalry between the Midis and Nor'easters was intensified. Bruce, often just referred to as "Diesel", joined the Midis in 1931. Similar to Edward and Toby's role as de-facto leaders among the Nor'easters under Mr. Star, Diesel served much the same role under Nigel Zorro, the Midis' controller. The Midis, who were already notorious for their devious behavior, became a larger hindrance to the Nor'easters, using underhanded and questionable tactics to steal passengers or goods contracts from their competitors. Despite this, Mr. Star, Edward and Toby ensured the Nor'easters didn't act similarly. The stark contrast between the behavior of the Midis and Nor'easters was well displayed in 1934, when Diesel shoved a truck at the Nor'easters' new shunter, Percy, while assisting Thomas and James in pulling the initial goods, causing the Nor'easters to lose a goods contract with the Cunard Line shipping company. The Midis were later exposed by the visiting Great Western Railway tank engine, Duck, who witnessed Diesel's act. Following this incident, Edward and Percy got along very well, with Edward properly welcoming the new shunter into the LNER along with the other Nor'easters.

Later in 1934, Thomas had an incident with a local constable, while carrying a load of stone along an unfenced line from the Anopha Quarry. Thomas and the rest of the Nor'easters, along with Mr. Star, were unaware it was illegal for an engine without protective sideboards and cowcatchers to travel down a rail line without protective fencing alongside it. The stationmaster at Knapford delivered the news to Mr. Star while the controller was in the midst of a discussion with Edward, over his late arrival with a passenger train, after resolving a quarrel between Edward and James. Shocked by the news, Edward immediately uncoupled from his train and delivered Mr. Star to Elsbridge as quickly as possible, determined to show support to his fellow Nor'easter. Immediately upon arrival at Elsbridge, Edward checked to make sure Thomas was alright, pulling up next to the siding the tank engine was resting in. Both Edward and Thomas stood by and observed a lengthy conversation between Mr. Star, the constable and the constable's supervisor, over the incident. The supervisor was kind enough to drop the charges and Mr. Star arranged for a fence to be constructed along the Anopha Quarry line. He also arranged for the Nor'easters to attend a number of legal seminars to be better educated on laws regarding railway operations on Sodor.

On one occasion in 1935, Edward took in dirty water which made him feel ill while pulling a passenger train. Despite this, he refused to to give up and did not want to let his passengers down. After reaching the station before Gordon's hill, he did not think that he could make it up the incline. The Midis' new heavy goods engine Peter thankfully arrived at that point and kindly pulled Edward and his passengers up and over the hill. Edward was very grateful to the larger engine and began to think much better of the Midis. As a result of Peter's assistance, a reporter riding in Edward's train wrote an article praising the larger engine and called Edward an "old iron" engine, which the elder engine took offense to. Publicity from the article also resulted in the Nor'easters temporarily losing several goods contracts to the Midis. As a result of this, Henry began overworking himself in a failed attempt to match Peter's performance. Despite being unable to keep up with Peter's performance, Edward reassured Henry that he and the other Nor'easters didn't blame the big engine for their reduction in goods traffic or his inability to match the abilities of his new rival.

The Nor'easters were able to increase their performance with goods work following the arrival of Eric in 1935. Edward and the others quickly became friends with the new goods engine. Unfortunately, Eric was very absent minded and often lacked in intelligence, which led to various accidents and incidents. One of these incidents resulted in Eric accidentally mixing up Edward's goods train with Gordon's express while shunting with Percy at Knapford, leaving Edward, Gordon and Mr. Star very unhappy with the big tank engine. Eric's problems eventually lead to an incident where he accidentally left a goods train on the mainline whilst trying to help Edward shunt, resulting in Henry getting a wheel flat. As a result, Edward delivered a sharp scolding to Eric for causing the accident and not paying better attention. Edward remained upset with Eric for his careless behavior for a long time afterwards, a feeling shared by Mr. Star, who as a result put Eric on probation, then gave Eric's job of being in charge of the harbor expansion at Elsbridge to Edward. In later years, Edward became more sympathetic to Eric's situation realizing the large engine was trying to do his best.

In December 1937, Arthur's Ghost began haunting the mainline of Sodor's railways, shortly after Edward and Thomas recounted the story of the Great Preston Disaster to their fellow Nor'easters. Though Edward didn't believe in ghosts, he changed his mind after witnessing Arthur's ghost pulling his ill fated train at Maron. During this experience, Edward witnessed a female bystander peering into the window of one of Arthur's coaches going clinically insane as well as Reginald almost having an accident after nearly colliding with Arthur's train. As a result, business for both the Midis and Nor'easters dropped dramatically. Edward arranged a meeting between both the Midis and Nor'easters to find a way to get rid of Arthur's ghost in hopes of saving their respective railways. During the meeting, Toby suggested Mr. Zorro talk to Arthur and ask him to leave. Though Mr. Zorro refused at first, Diesel was able to convince him to help, during which Edward, Mickey, Toby and Adam stood by should anything happen to Mr. Zorro. Luckily, nothing bad happened and Arthur's soul departed into the afterlife following the successful application of Toby's plan.

Due to escalating tensions between Nazi Germany and the rest of Europe in 1939, especially following the invasion of Czechoslovakia, Edward was one of the engines that helped deliver supplies to build Fort Sudrian. To make way for the first shipment of armaments to the island by Molly, Edward and James were shunted on a siding at Barrow-in-Furness, to let her pass, all the while Edward had to put up with James' complaining. Molly stopped for a few minutes to talk to both engines, with this being the first time both Edward and James met her. During the entire conversation, James was left speechless with a shocked expression, which despite Edward's teasing believing him to be love struck by Molly, was actually due to James' fear of rail mounted guns. When Edward tried to get more information out of James regarding his reaction, James rudely told Edward it was none of his business. Edward and the rest of the island would later find out following an intervention by Gordon and Percy, that James' fear was caused by a near death experience, where a rail gun went off on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway destroying an entire munitions factory, nearly killing him and taking the life of his romantic partner, Amanda. Despite the incidents regarding James' past and the derailment of a rail gun by Diesel, Fort Sudrian was completed without incident.

In October 1939, a Railway Operating Division engine and veteran of the First World War named Benson was assigned as Fort Sudrian's main engine. Edward was the first engine to meet him and did not get along well with him. Edward warned Peter upon his arrival to Fort Sudrian about Benson's overly militaristic behavior, at which time, Benson showed up and began barking orders and acting rude towards Edward and Peter. During this interaction, Edward mocked Benson while he was giving an order to ease his stress with the ROD engine. Unfortunately, word of Edward's actions reached Mr. Star, causing the Nor'easter's director reprimand Edward for his behavior towards Benson. Mr. Star saw it as disrespect towards a fellow soldier, as like Benson, Mr. Star was also a World War I veteran. He punished Edward by removing him from his mixed traffic duties and placing him on maintenance work. During this time, Edward helped rebuild the engine sheds at Knapford, due to the structure violating existing building codes. As a result, Edward and the other Nor'easters were forced to sleep in other areas of Sodor until construction of the sheds was completed.

Shortly after reconstructing the sheds, Edward participated in the Godred's Day Parade on the main line along with the other Nor'easters and the Midis. Edward paired with James following behind Thomas and Henry, where Edward and James were displayed as proud examples of the Nor'easters' mixed traffic engines. All the engines came together afterwards to watch the fireworks display put on that night. Unfortunately, Godred's Day fell on October 31. The very next day, the Nazis invaded Poland, starting the second World War.

Service during World War II[]

During World War II, Edward voluntarily enlisted in the military, becoming the commanding officer of the 110th Platoon of the Steam Corps (Also known as the Wild Nor'westers), which was an entirely non-faceless locomotive division of the British Army. He had no reason to not volunteer as he wanted to give the germans a thrasing and help avenge Colin, who died in the blitz. Other members included Thomas, Gordon, Henry, Peter, Adam, Douglas and Lily. Using railway mounted Gun Batteries, Edward led the platoon through combat in northern Africa and western Europe. The platoon also provided goods services to British and American soldiers on the front llines. When giving orders or communicating over his radio in combat, Edward would often speak in Sudric with the others, to avoid eavesdropping by the Germans. It was during the North Africa campaign, Edward and the rest of the 110th Platoon learned of Mr. Star's passing due to a bomb explosion while riding James' train to a meeting. One notable exploit during Edward's time in the military was at Heldenbergen, Germany in 1945, when he, Lily and Henry manned a battery against oncoming German engines, allowing Thomas, Douglas, Oliver, Toad and Blair to escape capture after being trapped behind enemy lines. Unfortunately, Lily would later be killed in action, saving Henry from the detonation of an unexploded shell, resulting in the latter engine being sent back to England for repairs, effectively ending Henry's service in the war.

Later in 1945, the 110th Platoon was ordered to invade a concentration camp (formerly a sawmill) at Bulbrik, in hopes of catching Josef Mengele, whom had escaped by the time the engines arrived. During their exploration of the liberated camp, Adam and Edward came across a shed, where Mengele had performed experiments on several prisoners. Upon seeing the human remains, Edward and Adam were declared traumatized, leading to the 110th Platoon being sent to Ostend, Belgium to perform rear guard duty, shunting equipment and hauling goods trains. There, Edward along with Gordon witnessed Adam shove a passenger coach full of Prisoners of War into Ostend's harbour. Although Edward reprimanded Adam for his actions, he had mixed feelings on whether or not, the action was justified, as Adam had done to avenge the deaths of Colin and Lily, as well as the atrocities committed at Bulbrik. Adam's actions led to the 110th Platoon being disbanded and the engines being sent home. Though Edward reacclimated to civilian life, he, along with Adam, remained traumatized by the horrors witnessed at Bulbrik, which led to both engines seeking counseling from Mickey.

Postwar life[]

Following the end of the war, the British Parliament enacted the Nationalization Scheme, which was set to merge the Big Four railway companies into a single entity, which would be known as British Railways. Sodor's standard gauge railways were unified in 1946, although the full formation of British Railways would not be completed until 1948. Mr. Zorro became the unified controller of both the Midis and Nor'easters, now operating as the Northwestern region of British Railways, until lung cancer forced Mr. Zorro to step down. Due to two corrupt individuals of the railway board named Basil Corbett and Giles Freeman being the only ones next in line to take Mr. Zorro's place, he arranged for Sir Topham Hatt (also known as the Fat Controller) to be secretly elected as the succeeding controller, while also stepping down as director of the Railway Board. Thomas took the Fat Controller to Tidmouth, where he delivered the news to his engines.

Although the engines were surprised, they genuinely accepted and welcomed Sir Topham as their new director, with Edward saying it's a pleasure to see him again, despite the confusion surrounding his takeover. Before the Fat Controller tells the full story of his situation to the engines, Gordon makes a joking remark that they're glad to have some variety for once, making fun of the fact Edward is usually the one to tell all the stories, which annoys Edward resulting in a sarcastic response from him. Following the Sir Topham's succession of Mr. Zorro, the new controller organized a reshuffle of the standard gauge engines, placing Edward and Eric to be in charge of the Brendam Branch Line alongside Diesel, Douglas and Adam.

From 1951 to 1953, Edward assisted Paul and Hurricane with the construction of the Peel Godred branch line. Both engines regarded Edward highly for his heroism during the war, which he was flattered by. During this time, Edward and Toby also met the second Arthur, who was to work on the new branch line alongside Samson (who arrived on Sodor in 1953), Paul and Hurricane. Due to having the exact same appearance and name as his supernatural predecessor, Edward and Toby verbally attacked and chastised the new engine over the actions of his late brother, until Sir Topham Hatt scolded both engines for their treatment of Arthur. Following this exchange, Arthur clarified he was built in 1943 and modeled off the original Arthur, leading to Edward and Toby both apologizing for their actions, then explaining their prior strife with his predecessor.

While a covert operation was being carried out by the Ministry of Defense on Sodor in 1955, Edward and the Fat Controller were sworn to secrecy and with held the information from the other engines, rolling stock and crews of the North Western Railway. After others witnessed the faceless tank engine and military personnel involved in the exercise, Edward broke his silence and told the other engines about the program, called "Operation Whitefleet", saying it was deemed a failure by the MOD after being spotted by Thomas and Percy on a late night goods run down the Loop. However, Edward is unsure if this explanation was truthful, as he explained it was a cover story told to him and the Fat Controller by the Ministry, should others become aware of the exercise's existence. During the Operation Whitefleet affair, Edward was interviewed by four gentlemen working for a mysterious organization, regarding the supernatural activity surrounding the Island of Sodor.

During the early modernisation period of British Railways in 1955, Edward was among the engines to show strong opposition towards the closure of the Loop, given he had originally built the line along with Thomas and Toby. Gordon, whom had matured past his earlier behavior by this point, was very sympathetic to the three engines and initially agreed with them as well. During this period, Edward initially found some of the new signalling and points equipment to be frustrating to deal with, calling it "new fangled nonsense" due to initial faults in the equipment. The new equipment had caused himself and James to derail on separate occasions, as well as a serious accident for Geoffrey. However, he and the other engines enjoyed the increased quality of railway track, which had rebuilt and updated thanks to modernisation.

In 1958, following years of being closed down due to a catastrophic flood, the China Clay Pits near Brendam were reopened and two new engines were purchased to run it. The cheeky twins, Bill and Ben, played a trick on Edward, scaring him in his sleep by whistling at him and teasing him, upon their arrival. Edward revealed he had known about the pair prior to their arrival on the island, as they were notorious across Britain for being pranksters at every industrial yard they had worked at.

A few days later, Adam broke down catastrophically while attempting to pull a goods train out of Brendam. When being looked over at the Works by Mickey, the cause was determined to be metal fatigue, which is considered a terminal illness to non-faceless vehicles. Despite attempts to talk him out of it, Adam requested the final firing instead of an extensive overhaul which had the chance of killing him in the process. Edward and Diesel argued over Adam's decision to end his life, with Diesel being against the decision where Edward thought the ultimate decision should be up to Adam himself.

Both Diesel and Edward went to visit Adam along with Sir Topham Hatt and Mr. Zorro, to comfort him in his final moments on Earth. Before the act was carried out, Adam told Edward it was an honor serving under him during the war, which Edward returned the compliment, saying it was an honor being his commander. After saying his goodbyes to the others, Adam and Sir Topham gave the orders for the Works employees to pour Black Water into Adam's tanks, placing him into a permanent sleep. Afterwards, Adam's remains were sent to the scrapyard, while Edward joined the other engines on Sodor during a memorial service mourning Adam's passing. As a result of Adam's passing, Donald replaced Adam on the Brendam Branch.

During the Pilot Scheme by British Railways, testing out the viability and usefulness of selective prototype diesel engines across their system, BoCo, an experimental BR Class 28 diesel, was sent to Sodor to work as a mixed traffic engine on the Brendam Branch, with Edward being among the first engines the diesel met. At first, BoCo didn't trust Edward or Donald, concerned the steam engines were conspiring to sabotage his trial, especially since he had severe operational difficulties. This sentiment was further heightened when Bill and Ben decided to tease BoCo and pull a trick on him after workmen brought by Donald sent the pair up the branch to follow the diesel, worried BoCo might be leaking oil as a result of poor design. Edward arrived while the pair were pulling their prank, reprimanding the twins and consoling BoCo, kindly reassuring him none of the steam engines on the island had any malice against him.

Persona[]

Edward is one of the oldest engines on Sodor. He is very wise, makes choices carefully, and always tries to help those in need, and is a friend to many. He also isn't quick to make judgements. However, he can sometimes be stubborn, as was apparent in the episode, Goods, when he wants to keep going with his train despite not feeling well. He is some times cheeky, as shown in the episode, Parade, where he mocks Benson for being uptight, which was not taken lightly by Mr. Star. On another occasion in the episode, Cows, Edward teased Gordon following the larger engine's mishap a cow during a goods run, making him late. Besides speaking English, Edward is also a fluent speaker in Sudrian, the traditional native language of Sodor. This is a trait he shares with Adam, Colin, Lily, Thomas, Toby and Diesel. Sometimes, Edward enjoys innocently teasing his fellow Nor'easters that can't speak the language, for fun.

In the TV show and Railway Series, Edward is often portrayed as being overly kind and gentle, to the point where he will be bullied by larger engines such as Gordon, albeit he is strict and disciplinarian with Bill and Ben. However, in the Stories of Sodor, Edward is very stern and doesn't take nonsense, being able to hold his ground firmly when being teased or insulted by other engines, or when in an argument with another engine. This, along with Edward's age and wisdom, allows him to keep his fellow engines out of trouble, along side Mr. Star, Toby and the Fat Controller. One such incident occurred in the episode Carriages, when he scolded Thomas and Percy for their consideration of spreading the rumor of Burke's affair with a mistress on Sodor, hoping to ruin his reputation. Though much to Edward's chagrin, a goods truck named Rodney spread the rumor anyway, resulting in Burke's life being ruined.

Edward's firm personality also allowed him to be a strong and effective leader of the 110th Platoon during Stories of War. Due the events of this miniseries, Edward also developed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder along with Adam over the horrors they witnessed during World War II. Unlike Adam however, Edward appears to have better management of his PTSD, being more open to counseling and talking about his trauma with others.

During his Furness Railway years, Edward had a personality with traits akin to that of Gordon and Andreas, sometimes acting uptight or boastful. Originally, Edward viewed industrial engines as inferior to himself and other railway engines, believing they weren't "proper engines". This attitude would later cause Skarloey to berate Edward and cause the smaller engine to greatly dislike Edward until he apologized to Skarloey for his attitude some time later. However, after Samson saved him following a near accident with a goods train, Edward's opinion and position on industrial engines. He also used to believe goods trains were inferior to passenger trains. His uptight personality was further evident when in 1907, Edward morally sided with Czar Nicholas II during a struggle the Russian people, believing the Czar's subjects to be too demanding and impatient. This conflicted with Winston and Albert's views, who saw the Czar as oppressive and tyrannical towards his own people. Edward likely matured beyond this behavior sometime before he was taken over by the LNER, as he heavily disliked Arthur for his overly boastful and arrogant behavior, between the time Arthur arrived on Sodor and his fatal accident in 1923. Edward later used his early life as an example, while telling a story to Duke and Andreas, in hopes that it might inspire Andreas to act more respectfully towards Atlas and to stop considering industrial engines to be beneath himself and the other Mid-Sodor engines.

Livery[]

Before Edward came to Sodor, he was painted in Furness Railway's Indian red livery with black lining, the letters "FR" written in yellow on his tender sides. Right now, He is painted North Western Railway's sky blue livery with red and yellow lining and the number "2" painted on his tender sides in bright yellow with a red border.
