"Mickey belonged to the Fire & Rescue Service, essentially the Fire Brigade of the Railway."
— The introduction to Mickey, Fire

Mickey (Real name: Michael J. Dufresne) was the fire and rescue engine and authority of both the LNER and the LMS, meaning he put out fires and helped out when there was an accident.

Biography[]

Mickey was built in 1912 as part of the Fire & Rescue Service of the Railway Board.

Mickey arrived on Sodor in 1923 after Arthur's fatal accident to serve as the Fire Brigade there.

In 1935, at Wellsworth Yard the shed was on fire and Thomas blow his safety valve and Mickey came to save the day and took Thomas to Crovan's Gate Works. In 1938, Mickey was on maintenance while Bob was on the tracks so he couldn't help that.

In 1948, a rampaging storm raged through Sodor. Mickey and his workmen worked hard during the storm, banking Peter up Gordon's Hill, clearing the line of any fallen trees and branches, pulling Gordon out of a mudslide and helping Neil and Adam evacuate the China Clay Pits. A week after the storm began, Mickey and his workmen come to the rescue of Thomas and Kate when they are trapped inside Marston Heights Coal Mine by a mud pile. Two hours later, the workmen are still working through the mud and Mickey finally realises how long the task is taking. A workman named Sam remarks that Terence could plough through, if he wasn't having maintenance, giving Mickey an idea to use a snowplough to ram into the mud, since the rain has made the mud soft. Mickey tells Sam to run to the signalbox to tell Sir Topham Hatt to call over two mixed-traffic engines right away. James and Donald arrive, with the former having brought his snowplough. Mickey instructs the two mix-traffic engines that he and them will couple up together and charge at the mudslide. Soon, the three engines have been coupled up together and have backed up some distance so they can gain speed and momentum. They charge into the pile at full speed, making a sizable dent in it before they back up to try again. This time, they successfully break through. Mickey congratulates Donald and James, as he remarks he'll need a repaint once they're done. Afterwards the mudslide had been cleaned up and Thomas and Kate were pulled out, luckily not suffering any serious damage unlike the mine.

In 1965, when a large munitions fire broke out at Brendam Docks, Mickey led the effort to put it out. He would also help with the cleanup after the fire had gone out.

This cleanup led him to Killdane Scrapyard, where he was processing the various pieces of scrap metal from the incident, along with Donald. One of these pieces of scrap happened to be a live shell, which prompted a quick evacuation of the area. When Donald’s valve gear jammed as he tried to move, Mickey put himself between the round and Donald, refusing to move. When the round detonated, Mickey took the brunt of the blast, killing him instantly, but saving Donald, who only took minor damage.

It is currently unknown what became of his remains, but since he died in a scrapyard, it can be assumed he was added to the pile during cleanup.

Persona[]

Mickey was serious, honest and loves safety. Mickey showed a kinder side and gave the engines some advice, which is both helpful and honest. Much like Joey, Mickey took his job seriously, and despite his stern approach to the rules, he always acted fairly, and did not abuse his power.

Livery[]

Mickey was painted in Furness Railway Indian Red with gold boiler bands. It is debatable whether the 'FR' logo on his tender stands for 'Furness Railway' or 'Fire Rescue'.

Basis[]

FR

Mickey was based on the FR K2 locomotive. Edward, Amanda and the Furness Railway Engines are other members of this class.

Trivia[]

  • According to Victor Tanzig, he wanted a fire engine, so he created Mickey.
    • Victor also said that the faces for Mickey are faces of Clive because he found his faces serious.
  • In The Stories of Sodor episodes based on episodes from TUGS, Mickey takes the role of the Fire Tug.
  • Mickey's full name, Michael J. Dufresne, is a possible portmanteau between Canadian-American actor and activist Michael J. Fox and the character Andy Dufresne from the 1994 film, The Shawshank Redemption.
