Toby is a prototype GER C53/LNER J70 steam tram that works on the Ffarquhar Branch Line. He formerly worked for the Elsbridge and Knapford Railway.

Toby was built in Ireland and was shipped to the Island of Sodor to work at The Harwick Tramway. After the tramway was closed he was bought to the Elsbridge & Knapford Railway and was shipped there. He helped build the line to Knapford, along with Thomas, who was built at the workshops at Crovan's Gate.

In 1938, Toby begins to have problems with his boiler. Since Burke and Blair were convinced that Toby was too old to still be working, they blocked every attempt to give Toby an overhaul, which is why his boiler had never been replaced. When Diesel tried to take the cattle train from Farmer McColl, Thomas chased after him, determined to beat him. Toby chased after Thomas to stop him. He manages to, but not without damage to his engine. When he, Thomas and Percy return to Knapford, Mr. Star is about to decide to retire Toby, but Thomas explains he saved him from being shunted. Burke and Blair show up and tell Mr. Star that they have arranged for a heritage railway in Southern Wales to take care of Toby. Mr. Star asks Toby if it is what he wants. Toby answered no and Mr. Star tells Thomas to take Toby to the works for a complete overhaul. His overhaul had been completed without a hitch and he had been completely revitalised, continuing to service Sodor's railways for decades to come.

When he heard about Stanley's story about his Jinxed. he got him a lucky lamp from the Skarloey Railway and told him all about it.

Toby is old but wise, hardworking, and knowledgeable enough about running branch lines. However, his advanced age and design mean that he is weaker than the other engines. While Toby is always ready to work hard without any fuss, he can be a bit temperamental sometimes.

Toby has consistently been painted brown with grey sideplates and cowcatchers. He has the number "7" painted on his sides in yellow with a red border.

Toby is based on a GER Class C53 0-6-0T Wisbech steam tram (reclassified as J70 by the LNER) built at Stratford Works. In the Stories Of Sodor, he was a Tram Engine that was used as the basis for all LNER J70/GER C53 Class Tram Engines.

  • In the Stories of Sodor continuity, Toby was built in circa 1879, as it was stated in Quarantine that he was nearly 59 years old, however. Toby's class was not built until 1903. This is explained away by the fact that he is a prototype of the class.
  • Toby is presented as OJ from TUGS.
  • Toby is age 60 in The Stories of Sodor.
  • Toby is fluent in Spanish, he and whiff are the only 2 engines that are known to speak a second language. (Other than Sudrian; Edward and Douglas know a small amount of French)
